To Suzi

Prune gave us all a scare last weekend. She stopped eating, even eggs, which meant something serious. She had a traumatic couple of days in and out of the vets; blood-tests, scans, injections, gross medicines. If we were distraught, little Suzi was worse. She struggled without her big sister, and knew straight away that Pruney wasn’t alright. When Prune came home in the evening, Suzi rushed to her side, put her paw on her, and spent the night and next day next to her. That’s Suzi for you. One hundred percent selfless and loyal. 

The 15th marked five years since Suzi came to us. I don’t know what happened before, but she was in pieces. You can’t underestimate what trauma can do. Even now, five years later, the sound of a phone ringing, or an absently raised hand causes her to whimper and shake. She’s come such a long way, but I don’t think she can ever truly forget.

Still, I hope her five years here (and many more, hopefully), make up for whatever happened. All the cuddles, the cosy winter evenings, and blazing summer days on the lawn, walks in the countryside, tearing after ducks and cats. Her cute wet nose on my leg, and velvety fur. When she sleeps, peacefully on my lap, miles away, re-living the fun of her walks and adventures. I hope she is happy, and knows she is totally and fully safe and loved.

Pets, and dogs especially, they bring so much. But there is always a mist that hovers on the edge, like dark clouds rolling in on a summers day. Their lives are so short, so fragile, but they make yours so full. I only hope they will feel theirs are too.

 

Suzi girl, here’s to you.

April/ May is the Suzi time of year, with both her birthday and anniversary, so I thought I’d write a little for her. Pruney is doing much better now, and is slowly getting back to her usual self. Wishing everyone a good weekend, and if you have a furry friend around, go give them an extra hug xx
