The Heatwave

July 31, 2019

I never thought I would say this but, it can actually get too hot. Like when its 39.6 degrees and there is no air conditioning. When the air is so warm and dry, it settles on your skin like a blanket. When the sky is a consistent, indifferent blue, like even the clouds can’t be bothered with the effort of crossing the sky. When at three in the afternoon, it is still everywhere, and by sunset, it is still scorching. The European Heatwave, which brought record-breaking temperatures to Western Europe.

Mornings, as I bike, already early 20s. Still water of the lake, reflecting a couple of clouds suspended in a wide sky. Roosters crow on the nearby farms, regal sunflowers soak up the early light. Prune and Suzi lying next to me on the grass. A tangle of scents; sunscreen, lavender, basil, salt in the air. It gets hotter and hotter. Late afternoon is as still as midnight. Then finally, as the sun sets, you can move, but slowly. The sun slips gently down over the fields, a flaming torch of reds; painting the sky a burning orange and blushing fushia.

Either way, when I woke up to the grey skies and a drizzle at the end of the week, it was like being back home after a tropical holiday.

I hope everyone is enjoying the eccentric summer weather right now. I will leave you with some photos of how to wear your summer hat best. Hugs xx
