16 degrees. Perfectly clear, not a breeze, not a cloud. A little robin flitting about, pecking at the feeder. Sunshine yellow butterflies tangling with my hair. Prune and Suzi, sprawled on the deck in the shade. Not really a surprising scene in summer, or late spring. But this was February, in North Norfolk. And we had a whole week of this amazingly unexpected weather during my mid-term break in both Bruinisse and Fleggburgh.
First, in Bruinisse. Biking under a soft blue sky, streaked with jet trails. Crimson sunrises, technicolor sunsets that linger and seem to paint the sky. Prune, Suzi and I, sitting on the grass, the hazy evening sun on our faces.
Then, in Fleggburgh. The dawn chorus; sweet robins singing, sparrows chirping, doves cooing. Even the blackbird adds a note or two. Then those perfect days of skies so blue they’re almost tropical, when the sun is so strong in the sheltered nook of the patio that its like summer. Prune lying next to my chair, Suzi in her favourite spot on the grass, under the cherry tree, listening.
The sun is sinking lower, the dogs wandering the garden. Its not like there haven’t been days like this before, but its so unexpected- this time a year ago it was snowing. School days are long, I’ve been sick often, its rained and snowed. So sitting in the sunshine, without wearing a hundred layers, felt even sweeter.
I had a hard time naming this post. I kept coming up with long winded names, like A taste of Spring, and A Spring suprise, which sounded a bit lame. So, settled for this one in the end. BTW, I do like the short forms for Bruinisse and Fleggburgh. Maybe it will become a thing 🙂 Its back to ugly weather here (and school), but here’s to hoping Spring comes early this year! Have a lovely weekend xx
